Russian Operator in BTC-e, Alexander Vinnik, pleaded guilty for his role in crypto laundering conspiracy, according to US prosecutors.



On May 3, US prosecutors uncovered a new face in the BTC-e crypto laundering scheme. Alexander Vinnik, a Russian national and operator, was found guilty of attempting fraudulent activities and responsible for a loss of over $121 Million.   



Alexander Vinnik’s Crypto Laundering Conspiracy



On May 3, a citizen of Russia, Alexander Vinnik, entered a guilty plea for partaking in a crypto laundering scheme. The conspiracy was linked to his involvement with the BTC-e cryptocurrency exchange from 2011 to 2017. Bloomberg Crypto reported the same on X.

Per the legal filings, Alexander Vinnik, a 44-year-old, was among the key figures running BTC-e, a prominent digital currency platform globally. 



From its launch in around 2011 until its closure by authorities in July 2017, coinciding with the Vinnik’s detention, BTC-e facilitated transactions exceeding $9 Billion. The exchange had a user base of over a million globally, including many from the United States.



Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco stated, “The outcome today demonstrates the Justice Department’s, along with its global allies, extensive reach in tackling cryptocurrency -related crimes.” 



The admission of guilt is a testament to the Department’s relentless dedication to employing every available mechanism to combat money laundering, regulate the cryptocurrency markets, and secure compensation for those affected, she added.



What Happened With Alexander Vinnik?



Vinnik is accountable for promoting unlawful activities and losing over $121 Million. In 2020, he was sentenced to five years for money laundering. Also, most fraudulent actions were attempted between cash and digital assets like Bitcoin (BTC).



At press time, BTC was trading at $63,220.12, after a surge of 6.47% daily with a market cap of $1,245,031,999,152 and $32,674,247,554 in 24-hour market volume. 



Furthermore, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Internal Revenue Service (IRS), U.S. Secret Service, and Homeland Security Investigations are involved in the case.          



Other Faces Involved In The Conspiracy 



Aliaksandr Klimenka, a Belarusian and Cypriot national, is another key face in the BTC-e money laundering conspiracy and operation. 



Between 2011 and July 2017, Aliaksandr Klimenka controlled BTC-e with the help of Alexander Vinnik and others. On December 21, 2023, Klimenka was arrested in Latvia, facing charges that may result in a 25+years jail sentence.



BTC-e was a cryptocurrency trading platform operating in the Russian market and assisted cyber criminals in laundering, transferring, and storing criminal proceedings. The platform received criminal proceeds, including hacking incidents, ransomware attacks, identity theft schemes, corrupt public officials, and narcotics distribution rings.



In 2017, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) charged over a $110 Million penalty against BTC-e and a $12 Million penalty against Vinnik.
